Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu submits request for a pardon during his ongoing corruption trial

5+ hour, 13+ min ago (719+ words) TEL AVIV -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday asked the country's president to grant him a pardon from corruption charges - seeking to end a long-running trial that has bitterly divided the nation. Netanyahu, who has been at war against the country's legal system over the charges, said the request would help unify the country at a time of momentous changes in the region. But it immediately triggered denunciations from his opponents, who said it would weaken Israel's democratic institutions and send a dangerous message that he is above the rule of law. In a statement Sunday, the prime minister's office said that Netanyahu had submitted a request for a pardon to the legal department of the Office of the President. The president's office called it an "extraordinary request," carrying with it "significant implications." Netanyahu is the only sitting prime…...

Luigi Mangione back in court on Monday for pre-trial hearing on evidence in case

15+ hour, 47+ min ago (325+ words) NEW YORK -- Luigi Mangione is due back in court on Monday for pivotal hearings about evidence that can be used in his case. Last week, attorneys for Mangione asked a judge to limit how some of the evidence is discussed when the parties convene for a pre-trial hearing, to prevent the hearing from turning "into a public mini trial" that could prejudice the accused killer. Judge Gregory Carro has set aside several days beginning Monday to hear arguments over whether certain evidence should be suppressed. Mangione, who has pleaded not guilty to murdering UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson, wants to preclude the prosecution from using the contents of a red notebook police said they recovered from his backpack when he was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The defense also wants to preclude Mangione's statements to police, arguing in a court filing…...

Afghan national arrested over alleged bomb threat in Texas, DHS says

19+ hour, 21+ min ago (214+ words) The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said investigators arrested an Afghan national who allegedly made a social media post about "building a bomb" and threatened to blow up a building in Fort Worth, Texas. Alokozay was arrested on state terror charges and is being held at a corrections center in Tarrant County, Texas, according to court records. His arrest came just a day before two National Guard members were allegedly shot by another Afghan national -- 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal-- in Washington D.C. One of the Guard members, U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, later died from her injuries. Lakanwal is now facing a first-degree murder charge. McLaughlin alleged in an X post that Alokozay "posted a video of himself on TikTok indicating he…...
